    A boardwalk is a raised path made of wooden boards, built a little above the ground. You most often find one beside the sea, along a beach, so people can walk without sinking into sand. In some towns the boardwalk is also a place to stroll, with food and small shops, not only a way to get from one end of the beach to the other. People also use the word for wooden paths through wet ground or parks, even when there is no sea — that is a gentle stretch of the older seaside meaning. It is ordinary English, and it sounds a little American; the picture in many learners' books is still the beach. It is a path you walk on, not a sport and not a stone sidewalk.
