A blurb is the short bit of writing that tries to sell a book, a film, an app, or a new product — the few lines on the back cover, the inside flap, or the shop page that tell you what it is and why you might want it. It is not a full, fair review. It picks the parts, often quotes a kind critic, and leaves out the boring or weak bits; that is its job. Publishers and marketers use the word all the time; ordinary people use it more loosely for any short description that is doing a bit of advertising. You can also blurb a book, meaning write or print that short praise, though the noun is far more common. Informal, industry-flavoured English — you would not put it in a very solemn essay unless you were talking about books on purpose.
組成A made-up word from 1907. At a trade dinner, a dust jacket joked YES, this is a “BLURB”! and showed a fictitious Miss Belinda Blurb calling out, described as in the act of blurbing. The joke stuck as the name for that kind of selling-text.
