    A bluebottle is a large fly with a fat body that shines blue or blue-green, like metal. It buzzes loudly, likes meat and rubbish, and lays eggs that become . People find it unpleasant. In British English this is the ordinary word for that fly; American English more often says blowfly. The name first belonged to a blue wild flower (a kind of cornflower, also called a bluebottle). The fly got the name because it is that same kind of blue. Though actually, in Australia bluebottle is also a name for a sea creature with a balloon-like float — a different animal. This word, in this entry, is the fly. Informal, everyday, and a bit disgusted in tone.
