A bluebell is a small wild plant. Its flowers hang in a row and look like tiny bells; in the common British kind they are a deep blue-violet. They grow in woods, and in spring they can cover the ground like a blue carpet. That woodland picture is what British English usually means. Though actually, the same English word is not one plant everywhere: in Scotland people may call a thinner, more open flower a bluebell too, and that is a different plant.
