Bluebeard is a man in an old European fairy tale. He has a blue beard. He marries a young woman, gives her the keys to his house, and tells her she may open every room except one. She opens that room and finds the bodies of the wives he has already killed. He tries to kill her too; she is saved, and he is punished. The story comes from France. The French name is Barbe-Bleue, which literally means "blue beard," and English copied it piece by piece. People sometimes call a cruel husband "a Bluebeard," but that use belongs to books, not to everyday talk. Though actually, teachers often say the tale is a warning not to be too curious — and yet the woman was right to be afraid. The locked room was not a small secret. It is a dark story, usually for older children or adults, not a gentle bedtime tale.
