Blue-chip companies, and blue-chip shares, are the big, solid names people treat as safer: they usually make a profit, they have been around a long time, and investors do not see them as a wild gamble. It is business and newspaper English. Though actually, "safe" here does not mean "cannot fall"; even a famous company can have a bad year. The picture comes from poker, where the blue chips were once the ones worth the most. From the card table it moved to the stock market. People now also stretch it to anything seen as top quality — a blue-chip athlete, a blue-chip university — but the first meaning you will meet is still the trusted company or its shares.
blue-chip 指的是大型、穩健的公司，或這類公司的股票。它們通常有獲利，已經經營很久，投資人不會把它們看成一場瘋狂的賭博。這是商業和報紙的用語，常見的是 「blue-chip companies」 和 「blue-chip shares」。
要注意，這裡的「安全」不是說它絕對不會跌。就算是很有名的公司，也可能有很糟的一年。這個詞的來源是撲克牌：藍色的籌碼以前是價值最高的。後來它從牌桌進到股市，變成股市的用語。
現在也有人把它延伸到任何被看作頂尖的東西，像是 「a blue-chip athlete」 或 「a blue-chip university」，但第一個意思，還是指值得信賴的公司或它的股票。
