Blowsy describes a woman who looks a bit fat, red in the face, and not carefully dressed — hair a little wild, clothes a little loose or crumpled. It is an old-fashioned word, and it is not kind. You will meet it in older books more than in young people’s talk. There is another spelling, blousy. Though actually, writers sometimes let it hint that she has been drinking, or that she looks warm and messy, without quite saying so. English tied this word to women, which is part of why it feels dated and unfair now. It is not a medical word, and it is not a polite thing to call someone.
