Bloomsday is 16 June. On that date in James Joyce's long novel Ulysses, we follow one man, Leopold Bloom, through one full day in Dublin, in 1904. Fans of the book — in Dublin first, then in other cities — keep the day as a kind of party for the novel: they wear old-fashioned clothes, walk the streets named in the book, eat what Bloom eats (a fried kidney is the famous breakfast), and read pieces out loud. Though actually it is not a public holiday; shops do not close, and most people who are not into Joyce have never heard the word. It is a warm, slightly silly literary tradition, not a solemn rite.
