A bloodbath is the violent killing of many people at one time. News and history writing use it for massacres, terror attacks, and terrible battles. The picture is of so much blood that it is like a flood. The word is strong; it belongs more to journalism than to gentle conversation. People also stretch it: a company “bloodbath” may mean many workers losing their jobs, and a sports “bloodbath” may mean one side was beaten very badly. That stretch is colourful language, not real killing. It is not a bath you take, and it is not a medical word.
