    Bliss is happiness at the top of the scale — not a good mood, but a feeling that everything, for a while, is perfectly right. People use it for deep peace, for a holiday that feels like heaven, for the first quiet moment after a long noise. It is a little literary; in ordinary talk you might say “this is bliss” about a hot bath or a silent house. You will also meet set phrases: ignorance is bliss (sometimes not knowing is easier), bliss (married happiness, often with a smile or an eye-roll), and blissed out (so happy you are almost floating — informal). Though actually, the word is very old English, not a modern invention. It comes from Old English bliss, an earlier form of blīds / blīths, “joy, gladness,” from a West Germanic family of words about being glad and kind. There is a rare verb “to bliss,” but you can ignore it; the noun is the word students will meet.
