1. 1

Blini are small, soft from Russia. In English restaurants they are usually little round ones, often served with sour cream and (fish eggs) on top, or with smoked fish. They are more a party or restaurant food than an everyday breakfast. Do not picture a thick American with maple syrup; think thinner, often savoury, and dressed on top. Though actually, in Russian the word is already plural — блины (bliny) — and one is a blin. Those home can be larger and made with yeast, not only the tiny cocktail ones. English borrowed the plural and then got mixed up: you will hear “a blini,” “some blini,” and “blinis.” All three turn up, so copy what the menu in front of you says.
