To blather is to talk on and on about things that do not matter much, or that do not hang together. It is informal, a little impatient, and a little comic. You blather when you fill the air: gossip, rambling stories, plans that go nowhere. It is not the word for a careful speech, and it is not as angry as rant. People also use it as a noun: a load of blather, political blather — empty talk. You will hear the verb more in British and Irish English than in American; in Scotland the cousin word is very much alive. Though actually, the talk can be friendly as well as . A can blather happily at the table, and you still love them. The sting comes when you mean “please stop, this is going nowhere.”

組成From Middle English bletheren, from Old Norse blaðra, “to talk in a messy, unclear way.” Cousin words still live in Scots (blether) and in Norwegian and Icelandic.
