Blarney is pleasant talk that is not quite true — smooth, warm, charming words you pour on someone so they will like you, forgive you, or do what you want. It is not a hard, cold lie so much as a soft one: praise that is too big, a story that is a little too neat, a promise that feels good in the moment. People mostly use it as a noun: “That’s just blarney.” It sounds Irish and a bit old-fashioned; you can smile when you say it. Though actually, it is not a kind judgement. It says the speaker is trying to win you with the mouth, not with the facts. You hear it more in stories and in Irish or British English than in everyday classroom talk in Taiwan.
