If you look or stare blankly, your face shows nothing — no feeling, no understanding, no spark of interest, as if the mind has gone empty for a moment. People stare blankly when they are shocked, very tired, or when they did not catch what was just said. Teachers know the look: a student gazes blankly at the board. You can also answer blankly, with a flat voice and no warmth. It does not mean the person is ; it means the outside is empty. Though actually, a blank look is sometimes a shield: the person may feel a lot, and just not show it.
