Blackness is simply the quality of being black - the color, or the total darkness of a place with no light at all, like a cave or a night sky with no moon. Writers also use it for a heavy, gloomy feeling or mood - 'a blackness settled over him' means he felt deep sadness or despair, not that anything actually turned black.
