A blackmailer is a person who uses blackmail against someone. That means they threaten to share a secret, a photo, or some other damaging fact unless the other person pays money or does what they want. The ending -er turns the act into the person who does it, the same way a teacher is the person who teaches. It is a serious accusing word — news, crime, and the law — not a light joke. Students sometimes treat blackmailer as if it were the action itself; the action is blackmail (noun or verb). The blackmailer is the person.
