A blackhead is a tiny dark spot on the skin, most often on the face, with a black-looking centre. It sits in a pore. Though actually, that dark colour is not dirt sitting on the skin. Oil and dead skin block the pore; when that little plug meets the air, it darkens. So scrubbing hard will not “wash the black off”, and squeezing can hurt the skin and leave a mark. It is an ordinary body word — the kind you see on cream — not rude, and not formal. A whitehead is the close cousin: the pore is closed, so the plug stays pale.
