1. 1

To blab is to tell someone something that was supposed to stay secret. It is not careful reporting and not brave whistle-blowing. It is the leak that happens because a person cannot keep their mouth shut — they get , they want to seem important, or the words just slip out. “Don’t blab” is what you say to a friend who has just been trusted with news. The word is informal and a bit childish or teasing; adults still use it, but it sounds like playground talk, not a courtroom. Though actually, blab can also mean “talk too much” in a looser way, not only about secrets: someone who blabs on may just be out private details because they love talking. As a noun, a blab is that kind of person, though this is less common than the verb. It is never a polite or formal word for “inform.”
