A bison is a very large animal, rather like a cow, with a big head and thick hair on its head and shoulders. The ones most learners see in pictures live on the North American plains. They eat grass and live in groups, and the males can be huge. People in the United States often call them buffalo — though actually a buffalo is a different animal, the kind you meet in Asia or Africa. There is also a European bison. Scientists and careful speakers keep the names apart; everyday American talk often does not.
