1. 1

Bismuth is a grey-white metal. In the table of chemical elements its symbol is Bi. It breaks more easily than many metals, and a piece of it can look slightly pink or rainbow-coloured on the surface. Doctors have used it for a long time in stomach medicines — the kind that coat an upset stomach. You will not often meet the word outside science class, a medicine label, or a talk about metals. People do not usually make jewellery from it, though crystals of it are sometimes sold as pretty objects.
