1. 1

A biro is a pen with a tiny ball at the tip that rolls ink onto the paper — an ordinary pen. The name comes from László Bíró, who made the first that really succeeded in shops; in British English the brand name became the everyday word, the way some people say a brand name when they mean the whole type of thing. In American English you will hear far more. It is a school-bag word, informal to neutral, not a legal or technical term. In Taiwan nobody asks for a biro in a shop.
