Birdshot is not one bullet. It is a cloud of very small metal balls, packed into a shotgun cartridge and together. Each ball is too light to drop a deer, but the cloud spreads, so a hunter has a better chance of hitting a bird that is moving fast in the air. People who shoot contrast it with buckshot, which uses bigger balls for bigger animals. You will hear the word in hunting and gun talk, not much in city life. It is a plain, practical noun — not rude, not fancy. In loose speech some people just say shot for the same load.
