A name given to something so bright that people said it could not be from here. Sailors were told the birds came from paradise, and the name stuck. So the words carry more than 'a bird': they carry 'a thing coloured like paradise'.

The evidence packet records that in Magellan's voyage Antonio Pigafetta wrote that local people said the birds came from the terrestrial paradise and called them 'bolon diuata', that is 'birds of God' — words close to Malay burung (a bird) and dewata (a god).
手上的證據記載：麥哲倫船隊的 Pigafetta 寫下，當地人說這種鳥來自天堂，稱牠們 bolon diuata，意思是「神的鳥」。這兩個字接近馬來語的 burung（鳥）和 dewata（神）。歐洲人聽到的就是這個說法，於是有了 bird of paradise。
