A bioprospector is a person who searches living things in nature — plants, animals, bacteria, and the like — to find something that might become a new medicine or another useful product. They are the people who do bioprospecting, the way a gold prospector is the one who looks for gold. You might picture them in a forest with sample bags, or later in a lab testing what they brought back. The word is formal and not common in everyday talk. Though actually, a dictionary line that says “the scientific study of plants…” is naming the work, not this word. This word names the worker. Companies, universities, and sometimes governments hire bioprospectors; may look at the same person and talk about instead, if they believe the collecting was unfair.
