Bioenergy is energy we get from plants, or from animal waste — wood, crop leftover, dung, that sort of thing — instead of from oil, coal, or gas under the ground. People burn it, or they change it into gas or liquid fuel, and then use it for heat, electricity, or engines. Governments and news reports use the word a lot when they talk about “green” power. Though actually, it is not magic clean energy: growing the plants still needs land and water, and burning still makes smoke. The point is that the carbon came from plants that grew recently, not from fossils. Do not mix this up with the energy inside your own body when you eat; that is a different idea. In modern English, bioenergy almost always means this fuel-and-power sense. It is a formal, technical word — you will see it in policy and science writing more than in kitchen talk.
