A bilberry is a small, dark blue-black fruit that grows wild on low bushes in Northern Europe — cool hills and woods. People also use the word for the bush itself. It looks like the blueberry you buy in a Taiwan supermarket, and you can cook it in pies or jam in the same way, but it is not the same plant. Bilberries are usually smaller, darker, and they grow wild; blueberries in shops are often farmed and fatter. You will meet the word in British English, in writing about the countryside, and on some jam labels. Though actually, many English speakers just say blueberry for both, which is handy but a little sloppy if you mean the wild European fruit.
