A bijou house or flat is small, but the speaker wants you to hear small and nice, not small and poor. People who sell houses in Britain love this word: a bijou apartment in the city centre. Among friends it is often a joke — your bijou kitchen is so bijou that two people cannot stand in it. The word still carries a little French sparkle, like a tiny jewel. Though actually, if someone says bijou with a straight face about a place that is only tiny, they may be dressing it up. You will meet it more in British English than in American English, and almost always about rooms and homes, not about people.
組成The noun was borrowed from French bijou, a jewel. The house meaning comes from a Mediterranean trade language, Sabir, ultimately from Occitan pichon, “small”, and then English speakers heard it through the jewel word they already had.
