A bidet is a low bathroom fitting — like a small, shallow basin or a very low sit-on bath — that you sit on to wash your bottom after using the toilet. It has taps and a jet of water, and in many European homes it stands next to the toilet as a separate object. That is the strict meaning. People also stretch the word, loosely, to the electronic toilet seat that sprays water (the kind with buttons on the side). In Taiwan that second thing is what you will actually meet; the little stand-alone French basin is rare in local apartments. The English word is a French loan. In older French, bidet was a small horse: you sit astride the fitting the way you sit astride a pony. That picture is still the easiest way to remember the shape.
