An old biddy is an old woman, and the speaker usually does not like her — , nosy, always complaining, always in other people's business. It is informal and . You should not say it to someone's face, and many people now hear it as a small, dated jab at older women. It started as Biddy, a pet form of the Irish name Bridget. In American English it became a generic name for an Irish maid, and from there a rude name for any older woman. That path matters: the word once carried an anti-Irish sneer as well as an anti-old-woman one. Younger speakers may know it mainly from stories and films, often in the set phrase old biddy. There is another, separate use of biddy for a hen; that is not this sense.
