Bhutan is a small, mountainous country in the . India wraps around most of it; China lies to the north. The capital is . English speakers often picture prayer flags, high roads, and Buddhist monasteries — and a country that talks about “Gross National Happiness,” not only money. Though actually more visitors go now than in the old “almost closed” picture. Population numbers used to be much higher in figures the Bhutan government once gave; a later census put the number much lower (about 725,000 in 2014). Sikkim, once its own kingdom, is now an Indian state on Bhutan’s west side. A country name: formal on a map, ordinary in travel talk.
組成English took the name from French Bhoutan, from Nepali भुटान (bhuṭān), from Prakrit 𑀪𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀁𑀢 (bhŏṭṭaṃta), a word that pointed at Tibet. It does not split into English pieces.
