1. 1

Bhangra is a kind of music that mixes old Punjabi dance music — big drums, singing, harvest-party energy — with Western pop, hip-hop, or electronic beats. It is loud, fast, and made for dancing. The older bhangra was a folk dance from the Punjab, done at harvest time. The English word now is used most for the modern mix that grew in Britain, among Punjabi communities, from about the 1980s. People also say bhangra for the dance that goes with the music. You hear it at weddings, in clubs, in films, and on the radio. Informal and upbeat; not a formal concert word.
