A BFA is a first university degree from some universities, especially in the United States, for people who study making art, playing music, dancing, or acting. The letters stand for Bachelor of Fine Arts. It is not quite the same as a BA (Bachelor of Arts), which is often more about reading, thinking, and writing about a subject; a BFA is more about practice — studio time, rehearsals, making work. People sometimes write BFA after their name on a card, a poster, or a website, to show they have this degree. Though actually, not every country uses this name: in Britain you more often hear BA even for art school, and the next step up in the US is often an MFA (a master’s degree in the same kind of making).
