Bethlehem is a town a little south of Jerusalem, on the West Bank of the River Jordan. Jewish and Christian tradition say King David came from there, and that Jesus was born there — that is why it sits at the heart of the Christmas story, with the and the star. It is a real town, not only a story-place: people live there now, and visitors still go to the church built over the traditional birth site. Though actually, English later wore the same name down in another direction: a London hospital of St Mary of Bethlehem became so famous for noise and disorder that its short name, , now just means chaos. When people say Bethlehem today, they almost always mean the town on the map and in the Christmas story.
組成From Hebrew bēṯ lɛ́ḥɛm, literally “house of bread,” through Greek, Latin, Old English / Old French, then Middle English Bethleem. Same name, much later, also gave English bedlam and the Portuguese place-name Belém.
