Bethany is a village just east of Jerusalem, over the Mount of Olives. In the New Testament it is a place Jesus keeps coming back to. Mary, Martha, and live there; the story of being raised, and of Mary pouring perfume on Jesus, are set in Bethany. He lodges there in the days before the crucifixion, and Luke has him lead the disciples out as far as Bethany when he is taken up. So in church reading it is not a capital or a battlefield — it is the small village of friends just over the hill from the city. Though actually, many English speakers now meet Bethany first as a girl’s name, taken from this place.
組成From Ancient Greek Bēthanía, from Aramaic beth anya. That is often explained as “house of wretchedness” or “house of the poor,” though actually scholars do not agree on this, and the story should be treated as uncertain.
