Beryl is a hard, valuable stone. The ones people cut for jewellery are often pale green or yellow, but the same stone can also be blue-green, pink, or almost clear. Though actually shops rarely say beryl. The deep green kind is sold as emerald, and the sea-blue kind as aquamarine — those are still beryl to a jeweller or a science teacher, just the famous colours with their own names. It is not jade, and it is not glass. You meet the word in museums, geology class, and careful jewellery talk, not in the street. As a colour word, beryl can mean that pale, slightly blue green.

That Greek word was borrowed from older Indian languages (forms like Pali veḷuriya). It was probably named after Velur — today Belur — in southern India.
