Berkeley is a city on the east side of San Francisco Bay in California, next to Oakland. People mostly say the name because of the University of California there; students and news often just call that school Berkeley, or Cal. In the 1960s, students there spoke out against the Vietnam War, and the city became a picture in people’s minds of young, left-wing America that did not follow the old rules. That picture still sticks, though actually all kinds of people live and study there now. In American English you say BURK-lee. The old English town the name copies is said BARK-lee, which is a different place.
