In British English, a berk is a stupid person — the sort of word you throw at someone who has just done something silly. It sounds mild, like “idiot,” and you hear it from friends, not in careful writing. Though actually it began as London rhyming slang: people said “Berkeley Hunt” (a famous fox hunt) to stand for a very rude word for a person, then cut it down to berk. A lot of speakers do not know that story, so they treat it as only a bit cheeky; some other people still feel it is ruder than it sounds. Americans almost never use it. Say it BURK, like “work.”
