Beriberi is an illness you get when your body does not get enough vitamin B1 for a long time. It mainly hurts the nerves, so a person can feel very weak, and the hands or feet may tingle or not work well. It can also make the body swell and make the heart struggle. You used to see it where people ate almost only white rice with the outer part taken off, because that outer part held the vitamin. It is a real doctors’ word, not an old folk name for tiredness. With mixed food it is uncommon, though it can still appear if someone eats far too narrowly.

    腳氣病(醫療用語。台灣日常說「腳氣」,多半是指香港腳,不是這個病。)
