Bereavement is the time and the feeling when someone close to you has died — a parent, a partner, a child, a dear friend. Schools and offices talk about bereavement leave: days you may stay home after a death in the family. The word is gentle and formal. Doctors, teachers, and funeral papers use it so they do not have to say “your mum died” in every sentence. Though actually it names the loss of a person to death, not the funeral itself, and not every sad goodbye. A breakup is not bereavement. People also say in mourning for that same season of grief. The related adjective bereft is older and a little more literary: bereft of hope, or bereft after the death.
組成bereave (to have someone taken from you by death) + -ment (turns the verb into a noun for the state).
