Benidorm is a town on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, in the Valencia area (often called the Costa Blanca). In Britain it is famous as a typical inexpensive package-holiday place: sun, beach, tall hotels, and crowds of British tourists. UK speakers may say “Benidorm” as a picture of that holiday — fish and chips, English-style pubs, cheap flights — and sometimes as a joke or a stereotype. Though actually, that is the British postcard, not the whole town: people live and work there all year, and the place is more than a strip of pubs. Still, if you meet the word in UK English, that holiday picture is usually what they have in mind. The name is borrowed from Valencian Benidorm.
