A benefaction is money — or sometimes another gift — that someone gives so a person or a group can do something good: a school, a hospital, a church, a charity. People also use the word for the giving itself: “a generous benefaction.” It is a formal, rather old word. You will meet it on plaques, in university histories, and in careful writing about charity. In everyday talk, donation, gift, or grant is what most people say. Though actually, benefaction often feels a little grander than donation: it hints that the giver meant to do good, not only that money changed hands. The person who gives is the benefactor; what they give is the benefaction.
