Beltane is an old Celtic festival on the first of May. Celtic people in places like Ireland and Scotland lit — Beltane — and brought their cattle to them. They hoped the fire would keep the animals well in the year to come. People also walked between , or leapt them, for luck. The name comes from old Celtic words meaning “bright fire.” It sits at the start of summer in that old calendar, and it is one of the big fire days of the year. In the last hundred years some people have started keeping Beltane again, with public fire shows; a famous one is in Edinburgh. It falls on the same date as May Day, but it is not Labour Day. It is much older than that, and it is about fire, cattle, and the turn of the season, not about workers' rest.
