A bellboy is a hotel worker who carries bags, takes messages, and helps guests to their rooms. The old picture is a young man in a uniform, because the front desk rang a bell and “the boy” came running. Though actually, the person may not be young and may not be a man; many hotels have dropped the word. In British English, porter is often the everyday choice. Bellboy still turns up in older hotels, in American films, and in signs that have not been rewritten. It is not rude by itself, but it can sound dated, and the “boy” in it is an old habit of naming service staff, not a comment on someone’s age. He is not there to ring church bells.
