Belgravia is a part of west-central London, just south of Hyde Park, known for expensive houses, quiet garden squares, costly shops, and a striking number of foreign embassies. In English the name already does social work: say Belgravia and people hear old, careful wealth — white terraces, uniformed help, streets that feel — more than new flashy money. It is a district, not a city of its own, but it behaves like a small world with a high gate. The area was built up in the 1820s on Grosvenor family land. The 2nd of Westminster held the title Viscount Belgrave, and the new took a dressed-up form of that title: Belgrave plus the place-ending -ia. Though actually, Belgrave itself is a village in , near the family's country seat, so the grand London address is, in a way, a country title that moved into town. Newspapers still use Belgravia as shorthand for that kind of London: polished, private, and very dear.
