A belfry is the high part of a building, often a church, where bells hang — a bell tower, or the room in the tower that holds the bells. People also use it a little loosely for the whole tower. Though actually the word did not start as “bell” plus something. It came from an old Germanic word for a defensive tower, and English later reshaped the front to look like bell because bells lived there. So the spelling is a folk story that stuck. You meet belfry in older writing, church descriptions, and the set phrase “bats in the belfry”, meaning someone is a bit mad — as if bats were flying in the bell tower of their head. That phrase is informal and a little old-fashioned, and it is not a kind thing to say about a person in front of them.
組成From Middle English belfry, from Old French belfroi / berfroi, from Frankish *bergafriþu (a defensive tower), equivalent to barrow + frith. English preferred bel- by a false link with bell. Doublet of German Bergfried.
