Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland. It is a port city, long known for — the Titanic was built there — and later, in the news, for the years of political violence people often call the Troubles, the fighting and the hard peace talks between communities often labelled Catholic and Protestant. Though actually the city today is also universities, music, and ordinary streets, not only that old headline. English speakers stress the second part: bel-FAST. It is not in the Republic of Ireland; it is in the UK as part of Northern Ireland, and that distinction still matters a great deal to people who live there. You will see Belfast on news, maps, and sports. People say Belfast as a place name; they say Belfast’s for things that belong to it, or Northern Irish when they mean the wider area.
組成From Irish Béal Feirste, literally “mouth of the River Farset” — the mouth of the river, not an English “bell” or “fast”.
