Beirut is the capital and the largest city of Lebanon, on the Mediterranean Sea. English took the name from Arabic (through Ottoman Turkish), and further back it likely meant ‘wells’ — a place with water. The city is very old, and it has been badly hurt more than once. Learners' books often mention the civil war of the 1970s and 1980s, when much of Beirut was damaged. That is true, and it is the sense many school texts still hang on the name. Though actually, people use Beirut for the living city as well: a real capital with people, food, and sea light, not only a war story. Latin had Berytus for the same place; that is the same name in an older coat.
組成From Ottoman Turkish beyrût, from Arabic bayrūt, and ultimately from a Phoenician name (bērūt) from a West Semitic word for wells. Doublet of Berytus (the old Latin/Greek form) and Beeroth.
