Beige is a pale brown — like sand mixed with a little cream, or wool before anyone dyes it. Clothes, walls, and sofas are often beige because the colour feels quiet and safe. You can use it as a noun (a room in beige) or as an adjective (a beige coat). It is an ordinary colour word, not slang and not technical. Though actually, people also stretch it: a beige personality means dull, with nothing sharp or bright about it. That use is informal and a little . The name came into English from French, still looking like French, which is why it does not sound like a home-grown English colour word such as brown.

That probably goes back through an Alpine form and Vulgar Latin *bysseus (‘cottony grey’) to Late Latin byssus, ‘cotton’, from Greek, and before that to a Semitic word for fine cloth. English bice is a doublet from the same distant source, but bice now names a blue-green pigment, not this fashion colour.
