In the Bible, in the Book of Job, Behemoth is a huge, powerful beast. People have pictured a , an elephant, or something larger still; nobody is sure, and that not-knowing is part of the word. Today speakers use it for any enormous thing that feels too big to fight or to move: a huge company, a giant machine, a stadium. In this living use it is usually a behemoth, not the Behemoth. It is a little , but news about business likes it. It is not a scientific name, and it is not a moth.

組成From Hebrew behemót, through Late Latin and Middle English. Most likely a strong plural of behemá, beast. Some have instead suggested an Egyptian name for the hippopotamus, 'the ox of the water'; that is only a guess.
