1. 1

A begum is a title of respect for a married Muslim woman of high rank, especially in South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh — and in older writing about those courts. It can stand before a name, a little like Lady in English. History books use it for wives, widows, and daughters of rulers and nobles. It is respectful. It is not a word for any married woman, and it is not a first name on its own, though some families carry it as part of a longer name. The sound is close to beg them, but the meaning is a world away.
